antique Nomadic Turkmen jumod sumakh kilim.

One of the many Turkomen tribes, the Yomuts, officially residents of that part of Southern Central Asia east of the Caspian Sea, currently known as Turkmenistan, are known for their varied and fine large carpets and kilims. The Yomut fled from Imperial in the nineteenth century and again from the Soviets in the twentieth century and now also occupy parts of both North East and North West Afghanistan. A fairly large group of Yomut families now live in Heart in Afghanistan. Turkomen kilims, rectangular and often large, are recognized by their deep red madder background with the traditional stylized Turkoman Guls or flowers woven in dark brown, black or blue wool. The Gul design varies according to the Turkomen tribe, of which a number are known for kilims, bags (juvals), tent bands and animal trappings as well as for the more famous Turkoman pile carpets. These tribes include the Salor, the Tekke, the Ersari and as in this case, the Yomut. The complete kilim, with highlighting details in ivory white, generally shows very little diversity in pattern composition except for the end panels. These are often decorated with brocaded amulet motifs where the weaver can show her artistic ability. Good examples are finely woven and this particular kilim, more than 80 years old according to the colour and weave, easily falls into that category. This kilim has hardly been used and has been stored for a long period of time. It is in excellent condition, and has a fine end border individualized by the weaver.
