Vintage embroidered jacket of the Akha people of Northern Thailand, mid 20th century. Hand spun and hand woven indigo dyed cotton with colorful cotton embroidery. This is a women's jacket of the Akha people, an important minority group originally from Yunnan who have migrated to Thailand mainly since the end of World War II. They live mainly in agriculture and have their villages in the highlands of Northern Thailand. The preparation and labor involved in making their colorful clothing is an important part of daily life in the villages, from growing and harvesting the cotton, to sowing, spinning and weaving, and finally the embroidery and sewing. The final product, the distinctive Akha clothing, is known and appreciated in the Thai highlands and beyond. Condition: The jacket is in very
